Scope of Works – 1950’s Bungalow Renovation & Extension
How do you transform a 1950s bungalow into a modern, energy-efficient home while preserving its character and charm? Our team worked hard to incorporate sustainable and energy-efficient design and build methods without demolishing the whole house. Despite the luxury of a large section, we needed to protect the outdoor areas from the prevailing winds and capitalise on the sun. Finally, as with any character home renovation, seamlessly blending and contrasting the old and the new was a top priority.
This beautifully modern home has plenty of space for this young family to grow. To overcome the challenges, the home was partially demolished, then expanded and refreshed. A new living space with a kitchen-dining room, lounge, laundry and double garage has been added – but there’s still character aplenty, it just has a modern twist.
Wood from the original part of the house has been carried through to the extension in flooring and shelving to connect the old and the new. Existing materials and features such as timber panels and doors were reused, and windows were retrofitted with double glazing to make the home as sustainable and energy-efficient as possible. New insulation, heating and lighting were added and energy-efficient appliances and a heat pump were installed.
A sun trap has been created on the sheltered new deck, which ushers light and warmth straight into the open-plan living space through glazed stackers. On sunny days, these doors can be flung open to create a spacious indoor-outdoor entertaining or relaxing area.
